The application of technology in modern design

Today, technology plays an important role in every aspects of life from home to the street, from company offices, production units to entertainment activities. The Fourth Industrial Revolution brings a rapid development of technology. Design industry also changes according to the technological development, making more significant breakthrough in the field of design and more contribution to the society.

The technology era redefined the definition of design:People have gradually improved interaction with each other through technological devices, felt the convenience and remarkable speed compared to traditional methods. Many years ago, people could only play games, chat, receive information, trade or enjoy art masterpieces by face-to-face meeting, and see with their eyes. Today technology helps us to see the world through tiny devices and access plenty of data through simple interactive touch. The process of approaching and using technology also creates more habits, behaviors and new needs; Therefore, technology is also moving and changing to keep pace with the trends and to promote the development of many industries, including design industry.

Design plays an important role in bringing the messages transmitted from the technology device to the target user. In order to be socially accepted, new designs need to be technological and create the technology platform, or more precisely, the design and technology should go hand in hand with each other. Many outstanding works in design field over the past ten years have imprinted with technology, especially the Design thinking trend.

It’s no coincidence that the “big” in technology like Microsoft, Samsung or Apple spends a great deal of money on product design and design to optimize the user’s experience. Once, the iMac with a big screen and high configuration was the dream of the designer, then now the Window Surface Studio has stirred up the art community with great supportive features for design. Samsung is also involved in this field by constantly releasing Tablet or phone models with a dedicated S-pen to help users design faster.

On the other side, the design field itself also has great effect on technological development. Recently, animation is widely applied in UI design to convey a specific idea before being included in the actual product. Or 3D style is increasingly popular and favored in today’s application interfaces. Vivid 3D images help users experience the world of true technology. By 2020, illustration will be a popular trend in design. The application using flat illustrations with modern, bright, and vivid colors will easily attract users to stay in that application longer.

The tendency to digitize all activities can be clearly seen through the global outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. Even the famous concerts, art shows, and exhibitions which used to be only shown and displayed in some special places now can be accessed by anyone as long as there is an internet connection. More than 1/3 of the world’s population must work from home via online working applications such as Zoom, Skype, Trello, Email .., because they are unable to come to their office to ensure social distancing. With the frequency of technology in every aspect of modern life, design now has one more task: directing human behavior. Experiences based on technology have a great impact on people’s emotions, thoughts, perceptions, and behavior. Designers need to redefine and expand the design concept : Design is to establish and create new useful and aesthetic things for society.

Design in the technology era

Design works in the era of technology take place quickly, associate with many fields(education, architecture, fashion, interior, media, graphics, e-commerce ..,), and are presented in many different forms and channels (AR, VR, 3D images, apps on phones, video games, ATMs, outdoor signs, shopping websites, educational apps and online working …)

Application design, interface design for software, and mobile applications have become a new trend in the 4.0 era when mobile devices can do almost everything from entertainment, working, and communication. One of the other ways to support design is using specialized tools with modern technology which not only saves time and costs but also makes a difference, creates the perfection for the product compared to the traditional method.

Interaction Design is also a prominent trend applied widely in Website design, creating a unique experience for users. Interaction on web interfaceor app is like a storyteller. Designer becomes the creator of stories which stimulate curiosity and are lively enough to involve listeners in their stories and his artwork and art world.

Some keywords about technology tools are becoming familiar to the designer community like Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, virtual reality / augmented reality (VR / AR), … Many big brands have applied AR to applications and seriously thought about approaching users with new real-world interactions.

Most of the VR technology is primarily used for the gaming industry, but it also gives designers a variety of multi-dimensional experiences to perform their work effectively. Besides, big technology companies are developing VR kits and applications in new and useful ways for education, health care, travel, real estate, architecture,…

It can be seen that applying technology in art design is not only a trend but also a necessity, creating products that are highly interactive, increasing the competitive advantages for design products, and having positive impact on social development.

Vietnamese designers are approaching new opportunities coming from Industry 4.0 to have new creative work and to catch up with the trend, at the same time, at the same time not to lose the traditional characteristics and identity. At the Faculty of Industrial Fine Arts of Van Lang University, students have gained many skills in the application of technology in design through international cooperation activities with leading countries in design like Korea over the past few years.
